Mumoni Hills Forest Reserve Resilience, Afforestation and Restoration Project funded by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
MERMA with funding by UNDP is implementing a Climate Promise Low Value Grant (LVG) at Mumoni in Mwingi North Sub – County in Kitui County. Climate Promise Programme is being implemented in over 100 countries globally. The main aim of this programme is to support developing countries enhance their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). It has been recognized nature-based solutions are very efficient way to tackle climate change that has significant co-benefits for human well-being and biodiversity.
Climate Promise programme is supporting Agriculture, Forestry and other land Uses related interventions with a primary focus on forests to help to meet the requirements for the quantification, monitoring, reporting and verification of greenhouse gas emission reductions from Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) activities. Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities occupy a significant area that is critical to global biodiversity and ecosystems. Traditional knowledge and local knowledge systems play a key role in addressing effects of climate and thus there’s an urgent need to integrate these aspects into socio – economic and environmental policies and actions.
Activities & Targets
Carrying out baseline survey and forest and natural resources inventory.
Support holding of participatory planning meeting on sustainable management of Mumoni forest resources.
Growing of 16,000 assorted tree seedlings both in the Mumoni forest and neighboring farmlands.
Support establishment of community tree nursery and two demonstration plots.
Carry out community training needs and support training meetings and workshops.
Organize and carry out exchange learning visits.
Development of information, communication and awareness materials;
